What is an Open to Question event?

An opportunity for people to ask any question about life, faith and God and hear answers that centre on Jesus Christ in a relaxed environment.

Why arrange an event like this?

In short, to reach people with the gospel who would not normally come to a church event. We think this kind of event should be part of our evangelistic strategies today for three reasons:

  1. Dialogue with people on their own terms in neutral spaces, as modelled by the Lord Jesus and the apostle Paul, is often the best way to connect with people who are sceptical about faith.

  2. We are committed to the preaching of the gospel, but people will come to this kind of event who would not come to a meeting where they feel they will be ‘preached’ at.

  3. Having someone unknown to your friends responding to their questions can help you move conversations forward without jeopardising your relationship.

Where should you do it?

For a small group, a living room can work well. For larger groups or people who might hesitate to come into your home, you could rent a community centre or a room in a café. In some cases, church halls might work. Whatever venue you use, relaxed seating and refreshments are essential.

Who needs to be involved?

  1. A Christian individual, couple, group or church needs to take the initiative to arrange the venue, invite people and pray.

  2. Christianity in Society will provide one or two people to respond to the questions. We are committed to honouring everyone by responding in grace and truth, with clarity and compassion.

  3. A church or churches in the area must back the event for four reasons:

  • These events should be surrounded by prayer from God’s people.

  • It is important to be accountable to leaders in God’s church.

  • These events are best as one part of a wider evangelistic strategy, for example as one evening within a mission or followed by an evangelistic course like Alpha or Christianity Explored.

  • We recognise the importance of follow up for people who come to faith through events like this by inclusion in a community of Christians where they can grow in their new faith.

What does it cost?

The main costs are whatever you spend on refreshments and the venue. We ask that you:

  1. Cover the travel expenses of our team member(s).

  2. Consider donating to Christianity in Society to support gospel ministry in Ireland.
